In Feng Shui every person has 4 auspicious directions, called Success-, Health-, Romance- and Personal Development Direction. There are also 4 directions that are inauspicious and should be avoided. To find out about the areas and directions in the home or office that provides the best support, the so called KUA number has to be calculated which is based on the date of birth. According to this personal KUA number,   the personal 4 positive and 4 negative directions can be determined.

The KUA number is an important factor in the Feng Shui calculations. To know about the personal KUA number and the favourable directions is essential, because sleeping, sitting or working in any of these specific locations will generally bring luck and protect from misfortune.

The Chinese lunar calendar differs from the Gregorian calender and starts with the Chinese New Year, which falls every year on a different date between 21st of Jan and the 20th of Feb. If the particular birth year lies before the Chinese New Year the KUA number has to be calculated from the year before. Refer to the Chinese Lunar Calendar at the end of the article to make ensure the correct Chinese year of birth for the calculation.

If the birthday lies after the 20th of February, then use the calculation described below.

With this easy to follow step-by-step guide any KUA number can be calculated:

For Women:

- Determine the correct Chinese year of birth

- Add the last two digits of your year of birth to reduce to one digit

- Add 5 to that number – for birthdays from 2000 onwards, add 6 to the single digit!!!

- This outcome is the personal KUA Number

- 1931 => 3 + 1 = 4 ;   4 + 5 = 9            A woman born in 1931 has KUA Number 9

- 2005 => 0 + 5 = 5:   5 + 6 = 11 = 2     A girl born in 2005 has KUA number 2

 

For Men:

- Determine the correct Chinese year of birth

- Add the last two digits of the year of birth to reduce to one digit

- Deduct from 10 – for birthdays from 2000 onwards, deduct the single digit from 9!!!

- This result is the personal KUA Number

- 1974 => 7 + 4 = 11 ;  1+1 = 2 ;  10 – 2 =  8    A man born in 1974 has KUA Number 8

- 2005 => 0 + 5 = 5;   9 – 5 = 4                         A boy born in 2005 has KUA Number 4

According to the KUA number the Auspicious Directions can be read as followed:

Try as far as it is possible to sit facing the most Auspicious Direction: sit on the writing table facing the Success direction. Or sleep with the head towards that particular direction: sleeping towards the Health direction will support and maintain good health or sleeping towards the Romance direction is beneficial while looking for a partner or to maintain a good marriage.

In case this is not possible to tap into the best direction for you goal, utilize one of your other three good directions, but avoid facing or sleeping into the Inauspicious Directions!

The names of the Inauspicious Direction sound a bit unusual; these are the literally translations of the Chinese names. What is important to remember is that they increase in their wickedness from Mild Unluck to Total Loss.
