A small Bungalow, called the “Sunshine Bungalow”, in
Pune before and after the renovation - some comparative picture and
additional some without direct comparison
The owner didn’t want to change the yellow wall-colours,
because even if the sun doesn’t shine outside, the whole house always appears
like being bathed in sunlight!
The huge kitchen space, which was used as kitchen cum
living room, has been divided with a wooden partition and results in an additional
room. Still the kitchen is big enough for 4 – 5 guest to have a comfortable
meal.
Two conditions were given:
1st: the high counter should not be demolished,
therefore the counter top remains unusual in height, yet is very comfortable
to work in standing. But this height was not suitable to place the gas stove
on the counter, for that reason an extra lower shelf was constructed, which
provides now even more storing space underneath and all spices near the
cooking area. With this arrangement the fire and the water area according to Feng
Shui are far enough separate from each other.
2nd: all installations should be removable
after vacating the flat again. Instead of going for inbuilt cupboards with
shutters the curtains offered the easiest solution to hide the washing
machine, pots and other stores under the counter and they also add to the
coziness of the kitchen.
The indirect light over the counter top presents
sufficient illumination for working area with out a glare.
The new tailor-made shelves provide a lot of space for all
crockery, easy to access. They stand by itself and can be removed without
remaining holes in the walls. To place the fridge outside of the niche
provides even more shelf space. The indirect lighting on top of the niches
distributes the light equally in the whole kitchen; the separate lights on
the cooking area, on the table and counter top offer ample light, where and
when it is needed.
The big kitchen-space has been divided and the additional
room became a bedroom. The direct connection between kitchen and bedroom has
been closed by a wooden partition, but in order to keep the new room spacey
and airy, the division towards the corridor only consists of curtains and a
carved paravant.
The long corridor became much softer with all the curtains
used to set the boundaries and create additional store room for i.e. cleaning
utensils.
The ‘Chi’ according to Feng Shui is slowed down and doesn’t
“shoot” towards the end of the corridor, instead it is flowing equally to all
the rooms now.
The shaky solution with the sink on a stool was not at all
convenient as it was to low and had its water supply only from the telephone
shower. During the renovation a new wash-basin was installed on the other
side with a “real” water connection and the wall to wall mirror gives this
tiny bathroom a bounteous impression. Due to the shower curtain a wet and a
dry zone could be created.
The small and dark corridor leading to the bathroom, where
the Chi could not move, was utilized before only for hanging cloth. This dead
corner was converted to a pleasant dressing table, because as per Feng Shui
mirrors should be avoided in the bedroom. In this well lit area the Chi is
moving now well due to lights and plants.
The following pictures show the Livingroom cum Study and the
Bedroom of that Bungalow without the comparison of before and after.
